Broadway Backwards Lineup Adds Norm Lewis, Roger Rees, Julie White, Rachel York, and More!

The roster of stars continues to expand for Broadway Backwards with today’s additions of Norm Lewis (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, TV’s “Scandal”), Roger Rees (co-director of Peter and the Starcatcher, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby), Julie White (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, The Little Dog Laughed),  and Rachel York (Encores! Little Me, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels).

The ninth annual edition of Broadway Backwards (#bwaybackwards) will be held Monday, March 24 at 8 PM at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 W 45th Street). The evening is produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and benefits BC/EFA and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York.

Also joining the lineup of top talent are Andy Kelso, who recently stepped into the starring role of “Charlie Price” in the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Kinky Boots, Jose Llana, who’s returning to The Public Theater next month to reprise his critically acclaimed role in Here Lies Love, and Kyle Dean Massey, who takes over the title role in Broadway’s Pippin next month.

White will co-host the evening with adorable young newcomer Bebe Wood, who starred in TV’s “The New Normal” and made her debut in the wildly popular theatrical Web series “Submissions Only.”

These additions join the already announced stellar list of Broadway stars performing in this year’s Broadway Backwards, including Bryan Batt (La Cage aux Folles, TV’s “Mad Men”), Michael Berresse (Kiss Me, Kate; A Chorus LineStephen Bienskie (“Submissions Only”), Stephanie J. Block (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd, TV’s “Blue Bloods”), Robin De Jesús (La Cage aux Folles, In The Heights), Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening, TV’s “Looking”), Colin Hanlon (“Submissions Only,” TV’s “Modern Family”), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Newsies, “Submissions Only”), Beth Leavel (Elf, The Drowsy Chaperone), Debra Monk (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, TV’s “Girls”), Cass Morgan (The Bridges of Madison County), Patricia Morison (the original “Kate” in Kiss Me, Kate), Ken Page (Ain’t Misbehavin’, Cats),  Billy Porter (Kinky Boots), Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, TV’s “Girls”), John Tartaglia (Avenue Q, TV’s “Johnny and the Sprites”), Max von Essen (Evita, “Submissions Only”) and Tony Yazbeck (Encores! Little Me, Gypsy). Performers subject to change.

Broadway Backwards is an annual celebration where gays and lesbians see their stories told through the great songs of musical theatre, sung by their favorite Broadway performers. Broadway Backwards began as a grassroots concert performed at the Center in 2006. In subsequent years, the event grew quickly, performing Off-Broadway, then on Broadway for the last five years. Last year’s sold-out show raised a record-breaking $347,060 for the two organizations.

The event will be again directed and choreographed by Robert Bartley will again direct and choreograph, with additional choreography by Amy Jones and Melissa Rae Mahon. Mary-Mitchell Campbell returns as music supervisor with Tim Rosser as music director.

VIP tickets include premium seats and a special post-show party with the cast.  A limited number of “Backstage & Beyond” ticket packages also are available, which include the opportunity to see the dress rehearsal, exclusive backstage access, a “meet and greet” with some of the stars of Broadway Backwards, premium seats for the show and more.
